Town Trail
Known as the ‘Gateway to the Moors’, Pickering has an old world charm, mainly due to the hiss of steam trains from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway as they pull in to Pickering Station close to the town centre. Nearby, the Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life takes you back in time with collections dating mainly from the Victorian era, set out in the rooms and courtyard of a Regency mansion. Pickering’s skyline is dominated by the spire of St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church where remarkable early fifteenth century wall murals can be seen. Above the town, Pickering Castle, an example of traditional twelfth century motte and bailey, affords wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
The trail explores the town on paved footpaths.
