 We are responsible for:-

Footway Lighting

Footway and street lights in the town are maintained either by North Yorkshire County Council or by the Town Council. Those belonging to the Town Council can be identified by a number imposed on a blue background whereas the County Council number is on a yellow background. Ring 01751 476503 for maintenance to Town Council lights and 01609 780780 for lights belonging to the County Council.

Cemetery Management

The Town Council is the burial authority responsible for the public cemetery at Whitby Road. See Documentation for details of burial fees, exclusive rights of burial and memorials. The Town Council also maintains the closed churchyard, an area containing graves, memorials and footways to the south of the parish church.

Play Areas

The Town Council owns five play areas and manages two others on behalf of the Pickering Play Areas Association.
Otter Drive: equipment suitable for children up to the age of five.
Troutbeck Close: equipment suitable for children up to the age of five.
Garden Way: equipment for children from five to sixteen.
Paddock Close: equipment for children from five to sixteen.
Greenlands: a large open space with a goalpost.
Hawthorne Lane: equipment suitable for toddlers and children up to the age of sixteen.
Manor Drive: a limited amount of equipment for children from five to sixteen. There is an area set aside for football.

Open Spaces

The Town Council maintains Smiddy Hill and Riverside Walk. Seating is provided in both locations. There are also small areas of open space in Vivis Park.

Public Seats, Litter and Dog Waste bins

The Town Council provides and maintains public seats and is always grateful to those residents who gift seats to the town in memory of family and friends. Litter and dog waste bins are sited at appropriate locations. The Town Council does take into consideration the concerns of residents about their location.

Footpath salting in the town centre during the winter months

The Town Council contracts with Ryedale District Council to provide this service.

The verges in the parish are the responsibility of North Yorkshire County Council; however, the Town Council cuts them twelve times a year.

The Town Council is a statutory consultee for planning applications. All planning applications for development within the parish can be viewed at the Town Council office. The Town Council responds to consultation documents from government and its agencies, health organisations, North Yorkshire County Council, North York Moors National Park Authority and Ryedale District Council.
