The Town Council is determined to communicate effectively
and actively engage with the Pickering community. To do so, the local
press attends and reports on Town Council meetings which are held on the
third Monday of each month in the Memorial Hall. Additional information
is provided about Town Council activities and responsibilities in each
issue of the Community Newsletter, the Pickering Beacon, on the Town
Council notice boards (on The Ropery, outside Eastgate car park and at the southern end of Potter Hill), through the
Annual Report and this website. A biennial Town Guide and pamphlet are produced. These are obtainable from the Council Office
and the Tourist Information Centre and give valuable and comprehensive information for
residents and visitors about the town's numerous activities and attractions.
The Town Council allocates five minutes before each monthly meeting where members of the Pickering community may address it on local issues. On request, Standing Orders may be set aside to allocate additional time for groups or individuals to address the Council on issues of local importance. Groups addressing the Council have included: the Renaissance Market Town 2020 Team; North Yorkshire Police; Pickering Flood Forum; residents concerned about particular planning applications.
To maintain strong consultative links with members of the community a series of regular meetings is organised in various venues across the town. There, residents are able to identify issues of concern thus enabling councillors to act on them. Councillors also attend the Town Meeting. This meeting has, by law, to be held annually on some day between 1 March and 1 June. In Pickering the meeting is usually held in May and seven clear days’ notice of the date of the meeting is publicised on the Town Council notice boards. Only local government electors for the town have the right to take part. Visitors to this website are invited to share with the Town Council their ideas on ensuring that Pickering remains a viable and vital place to live and work.
